Group piano classes in Spring & Houston, TX

Poco a Poco Music Studios

At Poco a Poco Music studios we believe in building a strong foundation, encouraging creativity, and finding joy and respite through music. We strive to do this through expert, nurturing instruction, creative time in classes, and performing frequently. Staying focused on those three pillars, our students build a foundation and skills that serve them in whatever musical goal they have set for themselves.

In addition, we hold the belief that as students encounter and overcome challenges in a musical space, this skill strengthens and will translate into everyday life. Every piece they learn or create starts with a little bit of fear. Each time they move through that fear and learn the piece or write the song they learn they can do hard things.

What People Are Saying

I don’t even have to ask my son to practice his piano - ever!

Thanks to Poco a Poco Music Studios, he LOVES to play and practice all on his own every day - sometimes more than once! He just started this year and has progressed extremely fast.

This is a night-and-day difference from the experiences we have had with the other piano teachers we used with our other 5 children!

We love Erica and Poco a Poco Music Studios! Highly recommend!

About Us

Poco a Poco’s Philosophical Pillars

At Poco a Poco, we’re okay taking things a little slow at first to ensure each student builds a strong and solid FOUNDATION. When that foundation develops first, students find that their future progress moves uninhibited by bad habits and undeveloped skills.

We encourage CREATIVITY - teaching improv and composition from the first day of class - using whatever skills they’ve developed. This creates freedom at the piano from the very beginning - reinforcing a belief in their own creative genius, not just that of Mozart, Beethoven, and Ellington.

As a strong foundation and creative freedom merge together, our students develop a life-long love for music that will bring JOY and respite to their lives, whether they are a concert pianist, an architect, or a math teacher.

Foundation

We provide expert instruction, high expectations, incredible curriculum, and top of the line practice aids for at-home practice to encourage our students to build a firm foundation. Because of the unique nature of our group classes, we are able to spend substantial time each week on technique, ear training, theory and composition. These skills are reinforced with the at-home practice tools. Before students advance to a new level, they meet one-on-one with their instructor for a private evaluation and new-skills tutorial to prep them for their next level.

Creativity

Creativity requires tools. An artist cannot create a painting without paint brushes and paint. For musicians, those tools include theoretical knowledge and technical skills. From the moment our students begin collecting their set of tools, we give time in our classes to use those tools in creative ways. At first, it doesn’t sound like much, but as they perform their small compositions and ideas for their classmates, they gain confidence in their creative abilities and develop into well-rounded musicians not tethered to others’ compositions.

Joy

At Poco a Poco Music Studios, we love to celebrate! When students pass off a song in class, they get to ring a bell, and the whole class takes a second to cheer for them. We love to play for each other. At least twice a week, the students will play short pieces for one another. You’ll find more cheering after that. When a student completes a book, the class takes a moment to shake the advancing student’s hand and congratulate them.

In addition to this, we believe that as musicians build skills with which they can play beautifully and create from their soul, they will find joy in their music. We hope they will go forward to share that joy with their families and communities in big and small ways.

Why Group Classes?

I started teaching Group Piano Classes because that’s what my son’s school requested. I, like most musicians, resisted, and turned my nose up at the idea of group classes, thinking them inferior to private lessons. But I did it, because that’s what worked for the school. After just 2 months of teaching, I had to face the anecdotal evidence in front of me, and change my mind.

A friend, also teaching group piano, compiled some data from his studio of over 200 students. In a four-week period, the average level 1 student in private lessons passed off 5 pages from their book, while the average group-class student passed off 14. In level 2, the difference is even greater, with private students passing off just 3.5 to the 24.5 of the average group class student.

What’s the difference?

I believe it comes down to a few things.

  1. Group classes are 60 minutes, with an entire 30 minutes dedicated to theory, technique, and ear training instruction. The other 30 minutes, we reinforce that while students learn music.
  2. In a private lesson, at least ⅔ of the time is spent giving feedback about notes, rhythms, and getting in reps that they weren’t able to get at home. This is essentially guided practice. Contrast that with students in group classes - they learn how to use and have access to specific software that connects with their piano. The software gives them real-time feedback on rhythm and pitch, all while providing a click track and accompaniment which help them naturally gain a sense of rhythm. Essentially, they have a 24/7 practice coach. This allows time in classes to focus 90% of our time on technique, beautiful playing, and theoretical concepts that help them understand the music they’re playing at a deeper level.
  3. Students practice at home more with access to this software. It gives them feedback. They get little confetti stars and crowns when they pass it off! And they have to play it well, several times in a row to pass it off.
  4. Learning in a small-group makes it more fun for the students. We cheer for everyone when they pass off a song. We pause everything when someone finishes a book to congratulate them. Encouraging their peers deeply feeds their own motivation towards success.

In the end, I converted. After 20+ years of teaching private lessons, I believe that these group piano classes are a better option for my beginner-intermediate players.
